World Education Conference 2022

Eco-Zionism and Global Education
After a two-year pause following the COVID-19 pandemic, KKL-JNF is again hosting its annual World Education Conference. In July 2022, over 260 headmasters and teachers from dozens of countries throughout the world arrived in Israel for a 10-day seminar focusing upon the Zionist activities of KKL-JNF and in the organization's response to the climate crisis.
The participants arrived from various countries, including the United States, Australia, France, South and Central America and Eastern Europe. During the seminar, the delegations traveled across Israel from north to South, visiting heritage and nature sites, met with local educational teams and took part in encounters and training sessions that dealt with the connection between Zionism, the environment and education.

The Australian delegation, which numbered 80 teachers and headmasters, was the largest in the seminar. Their tour began in the north, in the area of the Kinneret and the KKL-JNF House of Excellence which overlooks Nof HaGalil. The delegation continued to Jerusalem and the Negev, and ended in Tel Aviv with a special commemoration ceremony near the Maccabiah Bridge. That night, they visited the ANU Museum of the Jewish People, where they met Paul Griffiths, Australia's Ambassador to Israel – the only delegation that was honored to meet their ambassador.
"It is a privilege to be here", said the Ambassador at the meeting, " Israel and Australia are so close on multiple levels – historic, economic, political and cultural. Australia has a strong Jewish community, and its generosity is reflected in the amazing projects of KKL-JNF throughout Israel."

During their visit to Jerusalem, they met with Shlomo Ben Haim, Manager of the Diaspora Zionist Education Department in the KKL-JNF Education and Community Division. He emphasized the purpose of the Department and the Division: "We are interested in training headmasters and teachers to act in cooperation with KKL-JNF and to make use of the educational contents of the Education and Community Division. In Jerusalem, we seek to strengthen the Zionist identity of the educators in the diaspora, thus strengthening the ties between the students and their parents with Israel."

Even among the participants there was a sense of significant connection to the contents of the seminar. As stated by Liz Bezuidenhout, Scots College Sydney: "It is a wonderful opportunity to learn all about what Israel has to offer, and take it back to classrooms in Australia".

Jeanette Segal, Hebrew teacher, Moria College Sydney further stated: "It's been 23 years since my last visit to Israel, and it has defiantly changed, but it is still inspiring and the most beautiful place in the world."

The 2022 seminar marked the revival program of international encounters following the COVID-19 pandemic, and returned hundreds of educators to Israel, who wished to deepen their knowledge of the organization's work and with the connection between education, the environment and Zionism.
