As individuals in a dynamic community, they explore what it means to live together as co-learners, observing themselves in everyday activities and relationships. Their interest in relationship extends to the environment through organic farming, desert architecture, water recycling, the community's art center, and more. Today there are 90 adult members (families and singles), 70 children of various ages, and about 50 volunteers of all ages. These volunteers, from Israel and from abroad, come to Neot Smadar to find a fresh and independent perspective on life.
KKL-JNF has been involved with Neot Smadar for many years, preparing the land for growing crops, creating agricultural roads, constructed wetlands and a lake. In recent years KKL-JNF has been a partner in establishing the Learning Center, a contemporary, dynamic educational institute that draws youth from all over Israel and abroad. Study programs involve learning the art of dialogue, discussion, and cooperation, concurrent with practical study in sustainable living practices and artistic creativity. The development of Neot Smadar is made possible by Friends of KKL-JNF in Canada and Germany.
