Description: The memorial overlooks HaArazim Valley and Nahal Sorek from the summit of a hill. The artist Eliezer Weishoff installed a large, 9-meter-tall metal sculpture in the center of a round plaza. The sculpture represents the US flag, and its upper part suggests a flame ascending to the sky. There is a piece of steel from the structure of the Twin Towers behind the glass window at the base of the sculpture. The memorial panels in the wall around the plaza commemorate the names of the 2,794 victims killed in the disaster, including five Israelis. HaArazim Valley is part of Jerusalem Park, a green belt of forests and woods surrounding the capital city. Slightly to the east of the memorial, KKL-JNF has built a camping site with picnic tables.
Directions:
Western entrance: Route 1, from Tel Aviv – enter at the entrance to Beit Zayit (between Km markers 53 and 54) and continue 400 m north parallel to Route 1. Cross under Route 1 and turn east (north at the exit from the tunnel on a dirt road). Drive to the memorial according to the signs.
Route 1 from Jerusalem – turn right at the eastern entrance to Mevaseret Zion (between Km markers 53 and 54). At the T junction, continue straight ahead on the dirt road to the entrance to the valley.
Eastern entrance: From Golda Meir Boulevard, for those arriving from the north (before the entrance to Begin South).
