Plant A Tree, Combat Climate Change

Plant A Tree, Combat Climate Change

To protect the environment for the future generations, we must be proactive in preserving and expanding our forests. KKL-JNF has been actively engaging in this for over 120 years. Through its unprecedented forestry project, KKL-JNF has increased the forested areas in Israel by 1800% since the start of the 20th century.

Trees offer many environmental benefits. They improve air quality by releasing oxygen, and filtering harmful dust and pollutants such as ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide. By actively removing CO2 from the air through photosynthesis, trees limit the effects of greenhouse gas emissions and reduce their impact on climate change. KKL-JNF forests capture some 1.2 million tons of CO2 each year.

In addition, trees trap runoff from storms and flash floods, reducing the dangers associated with erosion and flooding. Furthermore, many wildlife species depend on trees for their habitat. Trees provide food, protection, and homes for countless birds, insects and mammals.

The Earth's forests and soil currently absorb about 30 percent of atmospheric carbon emissions. While deforestation has occurred throughout history, the practice escalated dramatically after the Industrial Revolution. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), some 7.3 million hectares (18 million acres) of forest are lost annually, and approximately half of Earth's tropical forests have already been destroyed.

In line with their mission to promote a sustainable afforestation policy that meets global environmental goals, KKL-JNF plans on planting 6 million more trees in Israel over the next decade. As one of the world's oldest sustainable development organizations, KKL-JNF understands that nature is crucial to our survival, and it works diligently to improve the human relationship with the natural environment.

Since its founding in 1901, KKL-JNF has been promoting biodiversity, combatting desertification, protecting wildlife, and supporting environmental research, all to ensure a viable, sustainable natural environment in the State of Israel. The organization maintains some 300,000 acres of natural forest and woodland and expands green lungs in cities.

Thanks to the green vision of KKL-JNF, the future of Israel's open spaces is in good hands.
