The unit consists of two departments - one dedicated to large-scale climate projects and climate innovation projects, and another department, focused on training and different means of knowledge transfer.
KKL-JNF Chairperson Yifat Ovadia Lusky: “We have decided to set up a unit for fighting climate change, which will help local and regional authorities cope with the challenges arising from this crisis”
Many countries are already implementing strategic plans for coping with climate change impacts. We feel it every minute of every day: the weather extremes, the global water shortage, and mounting damages which jeopardize human existence on the planet. In addition to KKL-JNF’s work on this crisis so far, through the Chief Scientist Unit, the Land Development Division etc., this past year KKL-JNF set up a national climate center. The center will soon become a standardized unit. It will be the first designated unit for fighting climate change in the Organization’s history.
The unit will carry out innovative projects and will work on channels that are different from those used by the Organization’s existing climate divisions. The unit will consist of two departments. One department will work on innovative climate-related projects on the national level - for example, preparation for climate change in the rural region, or urban afforestation by the municipalities. This department will also promote climate innovation projects - for example, renewable energy and energy efficiency. The second department will promote social and leadership initiatives such as training programs, climate leadership programs in public institutions, etc.
KKL-JNF Chairperson Yifat Ovadia Lusky: “KKL-JNF creates green belts, prevents fires, develops Israeli agriculture, restores streams and carries out extensive environment protection activities. We have decided to set up a special unit for fighting climate change, which will help local and regional authorities cope with the challenges arising from this crisis. As part of this initiative, we will be providing tools for communicating the importance of nature and environmental protection to the younger generation, and we will outline how each and every one of us can make a difference”.
