"A Green Display Window": The Rehabilitation Project at the Sorek Stream and BILU Forest near Yavne

A three-year project concluded – KKL-JNF, the Drainage Authority, and the Yavne municipality have completed the rehabilitation of the Sorek Stream and the BILU Forest. In addition, KKL-JNF and the Netivei Israel company will move oak trees from the Ariel Sharon Park to the forest.

KKL-JNF collaborated with the Drainage Authority and the Yavne Municipality to rehabilitate the Natuf Stream located within the BILU Forest, in section near the industrial zone serving the Yavne and Gan Raveh municipalities. The rehabilitation process began in 2019, and all three parties will establish a joint management to advance investments in the stream and its surroundings.

The area contains the remains of a dune landscape, which for many years suffered from thefts and waste disposal. In addition, the area also saw an infestation of Acacia saligna, defined as an invasive species. The spread of the Acacia trees changes the nature of the plants and the area.

KKL-JNF decided to take a unique approach to the rehabilitation process, which took three years, during which the Acacia trees were removed and ecological methods as wheat planting were used. In addition, where it was possible, olive trees were planted next to the industrial zone, with the intention of creating olive harvest sections for the residents and for travelers.

The forest planning focuses on planting trees that fits the dune landscape from the Israel coast and plains area: gall oak, jujube, sycamore and Ficus trees, as well as support for grass growth that accompanies the hills and dunes. In addition, the remains of migrating dune will remain in the site.
In addition, KKL-JNF and the drainage authority work to deepen the Sorek Stream, planting unique grass on its banks, and plating trees along the stream to create a landscape promenade with sitting spots.

Now KKL-JNF, the Netivei Israel national company and Tel Aviv's Planning Department promote the movement of gall oak trees to the forest. These trees were planted and nurtured by KKL-JNF a few years ago during the development of the Ariel Sharon Park. Moving the trees became necessary due to the change of water heights in the park.

Gilad Mastai, Manager of the Plains and Coastal Area at KKL-JNF: "After three years of work, we act as part of a unique KKL-JNF project in order to turn the city's back yard to a green and lively display window. We would like to thank all of our partners with whom we work to rehabilitate areas that became waste mountains, turning them into green areas for the benefit of the public."
