Young People Enlist: KKL-JNF Scouts Clean up Israel’s Beaches

At the end of last week thousands of tons of tar washed up on Israel’s beaches. In the wake of the disaster, KKL-JNF’s Education and Community Division immediately rose to the challenge and together with its youth movement Green Horizons, initiated clean-up activities on coastal areas that sustained major damage.

After an organized briefing, hundreds of KKL-JNF Scouts equipped with bags, gloves and, of course, masks, set out to clean up the polluted shorelines of Nitzanim, Netanya and Akhziv. Hundreds of young participants in pre-military preparatory programs likewise joined the cleanup campaign at the behest of KKL-JNF’s Education and Community Division.

KKL-JNF Education and Community Division Director Sar-Shalom Jerbi: “The disaster we are currently witnessing has seriously damaged the maritime environment and its wildlife. I am proud of these young people who have rolled up their sleeves and enlisted in the joint effort to rehabilitate the beaches. We at KKL-JNF shall continue to volunteer and take action in order to minimize the damage and restore the Land of Israel to its former beauty.”

Green Horizons is KKL-JNF's young scouts program for youth from the 5th to 12th grades. The program (also called "Hugei Sayarut KaKaL"), uses outdoor activities and excursions to foster interpersonal skills, a sense of social responsibility, and above all, a love of the land. Green Horizons is the only organization in Israel to educate for environmental stewardship as a core Zionist value.
