A Special Tu Bishvat in Hijuelas, Chile

On February 10th, Tu Bishvat, the New Year for Trees, was celebrated in Hijuelas in a moving ceremony by the Israeli Embassy, with the attendance of local and regional officials.

The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Hijuelas, Veronica Rossat; the Business Attaché at the Israel Embassy, Mr. Jonatan Bar-El; councilors, representatives of the Evangelical Churches in the city, Rabbi Eduardo Waingortin, KKL-JNF Emissary Roberto Muñoz; local authorities, the Representative of Conaf, the Head of the Regional Planning and Coordination Secretariat (SERPLAC) of Nogales, and others.

The event was held at the Hijuelas social center for children of temporary workers. The children performed an Israeli dance related to the harvest as well as theater play “The tree that had no leaves”. The Israeli Embassy distributed certificates and special gifts- musical instruments for the Music Workshop at the Center.

An olive tree planting ceremony also took place with the participation of the chief Rabbi Eduardo Waingortin together with the children, diplomats and the attending authorities.

This is the second year holding the Tu Bishvat celebration in Hijuelas, an exemplary city and commune in the Quillota Province of central Chile's fifth region of Valparaíso that was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
