Prime Minister of Togo Plants a Tree in The Grove of Nations

May 10, 2009

The Prime Minister of Togo, Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, returned to his former profession as an agriculturist for a few minutes, when he took a hoe in his hands and planted a small olive tree in the Grove of Nations, located close to Mount Herzl and the Yad Vashem Museum.

The visiting Prime Minister, in this, his first trip to Israel, came to the ceremony accompanied by an honorable entourage, all of whom seemed particularly moved to be present at a tree planting in the Holy Land. They were greeted by KKL-JNF vice-Chairman Menachem Leibovic and together they unveiled a plaque at the site listing the names of many heads of state worldwide who had planted a tree in this special grove.

In his greetings to the Prime Minister of Togo, Leibovic stressed the importance of Israel's close connection with Togo and the mutual benefit to both counties in exchanging knowledge and experience. "At KKL-JNF, we see our mission in fighting the new global threats of our times: desertification, global warming and environmental pollution. KKL-JNF would be happy to collaborate with Togo in the fields of afforestation, agriculture and the environment. Planting a tree in Israel is an ancient and meaningful gesture. We are proud to have you, Mr. Prime Minister of Togo, Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, join the ranks of other world leaders in planting a tree symbolizing peace and friendship and serving as a guaranty for prosperity and long life."

The Prime Minister of Togo replied with heartfelt words of thanks, that this tree- planting symbolizes a new era in the relations between Togo and Israel; just as the sapling itself represents a hope for the future. In the name of Togo's President and their entire nation, he thanked KKL-JNF, and expressed the hope that Togo would utilize the great know-how that KKL-JNF and the scientific community in Israel have acquired in the field of fighting desertification – one of the difficulties facing Togo.

The Prime Minister himself read the Planter's Prayer aloud and proceeded to plant a small olive sapling in the Grove of Nations. After the ceremony, several members of his entourage said that although they studied much about Israel before they came, they were astonished to see the pace of development on the one hand and the country's green vistas, which they had envisaged as desert! They all related to the fact that as believing Christians, this, their first visit to the Holy Land, was especially meaningful and indeed, immediately after the ceremony, the Prime Minister of Togo and his entourage set off to visit the holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem.
