KKL-JNF forestry and afforestation activities line up with the following 3 UN Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG #3: Good Health and Wellbeing
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages is essential to sustainable development.
In addition to preserving open spaces for a sustainable environment, KKL-JNF promotes public health and well-being through developing forest and urban walking and cycling trails, inclusive cycling trails, playgrounds, sports grounds and facilities, and forest leisure and recreation sites with fitness equipment, among many projects to encourage restorative activities in nature, open to all and free of charge.
SDG #13: Climate Action
The millions of trees planted by KKL-JNF has transformed degraded land into green and flourishing landscapes. We have reforested 40,000 acres of arid and semi-arid land in Israel.
As the stewards of 120,000 hectares (300,000 acres) of planted forests and natural woodlands in Israel, we protect and promote their biodiversity. Crucially, the forests capture 1.2 million tons of CO2 each year, helping to mitigate greenhouse gas.
KKL-JNF advances green public transportation and constructs cycling trails to encourage the use of bicycles over cars. Among other projects, banning plastic in Israel's forests are part of KKL-JNF's environmental education and advocacy.
SDG #15: Life on Land
Nature is critical to our survival, providing us with oxygen, regulating weather patterns, pollinating crops, and producing food, feed and fiber.
KKL-JNF promotes biodiversity through planting diverse tree species, including those native to the region. The trees we plant include broadleaved and coniferous species; shade-giving trees; nectar-rich trees for bees; and trees in arid and semi-arid regions that push back the desert and prevent soil erosion.
On the outskirts of towns and cities, KKL-JNF creates green lungs that help lower local temperatures in this hot region by several degrees.
We also rehabiliate wildlife habitats, and advance the study of birds and their wellbeing. We also run the only wildlife reacclimation center in Israel. KKL-JNF's efforts to protect the country's flora and fauna are part and parcel of its work to ensure a viable natural environment for future generations.
