Hundreds of Dunam of Forests and Natural Woodlands Destroyed

Thirty days after the huge Carmel forest fire, KKL-JNF invited participants of the Chabad Youth Organization conference for a visit to see the damage done by the Carmel forest fire and to participate in work that contributes to forest restoration. At the end of the work, participants held a prayer service in memory of the 44 victims of the fire, at the site where their bus went up in flames.

It does a great job absorbing greenhouses gas. It serves as a fertile platform for ecological experiments. It provides breathtaking desert views.  It is the Yatir Forest. And it’s a powerful weapon in fighting desertification.

Almost two years have passed since the Galilee forests were ablaze and thousands of dunam of decades-old woodland were blackened by the flames ignited by the Second Lebanese War. Nevertheless, the scale of damage caused to landscapes and the environment in the Naftali Mountains, Biria Forest and all the other areas of forest and natural woodland that were almost completely destroyed, is equaled by the scale of the opportunity available for changing the face of the monotonous pinewoods through a combination of swift action and practical research.

5,300 dunam of trees were burned last year in 609 forest fires. 11 forest-firefighting trucks will be joining KKL-JNF soon, together with a number of fire-seasoned Greeks who will teach us the things we don’t know
