World Day to Combat Desertification 2015: 'No such thing as a free lunch. Invest in healthy soils'

KKL-JNF will observe WDCD 2015 on June 17-18 by hosting special events at EXPO 2015. In practice, however, the organization observes WDCD every day of the year.

The World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) is observed worldwide on 17 June every year. The focus this year is attainment of food security for all through sustainable food systems, under the slogan: 'No such thing as a free lunch. Invest in healthy soil.'

According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the 2015 observance of WDCD under the slogan 'No such thing as a free lunch. Invest in healthy soil' calls for:

  • A change in our land use practices through smart agriculture and adaptation to changing climate, especially in the dry fragile parts of the world where food shortages are becoming more and more severe

  • Access to technology and land rights for small holder farmers who safeguard the environment and meet the food needs of millions of households, especially among the poorest households

  • More effective action on desertification whose effects on security, peace and stability are invisible yet real for the affected countries due especially to food and water scarcity and environmentally forced migration.

The 2015 World Day to Combat Desertification will feature a global observance event in Milan, Italy, during EXPO 2015 as well as national and local observances.

The global observance event will be held on Wednesday 17th of June at the Conference Center at EXPO Milano and will begin at 11:00 AM.

As part of the event, KKL-JNF will host a festive lunch which will include honored guests Monique Barbut, UNCCD Executive Secretary; H.E. Mr. Pohamba Shifeta, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Namibia; Maria Helena Semedo, Deputy Director-General, FAO; Pia Bucella, Director, Natural Capital, Directorate-General for the Environment, European Commission; Raffaelo Cervigni, Lead Environmental Economist, The World Bank; and Giampaolo Cantini, Director General of Development Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Italy. KKL-JNF World Chairman Efi Stenzler will address the guests at this event.

The day after on June 18th, the KKL-JNF compound at the Israel Pavilion is also hosting a professional seminar on soil conservation.
