The project focuses upon the unique connection between the city and the forests that surround it, while planning and establishing trails adapted for hiking and which make the green spaces accessible to the entire population. The new hiking trails will be fully integrated into the public transportation system in the city, so that the trails can be reached easily via the light rail and buses. This connection will enable not only residents of the city, but also visitors from throughout Israel to enjoy the Jerusalemite nature in an accessible and easy manner.
The system includes a number of key trails which are currently in advanced stages of completion including a trail surrounding Mount Herzl – a panoramic trail that enables walking along the breathtaking landscapes of the region as well as hiking trails in the Ramot Forest and the Jerusalem Forest in four different locations. We are also promoting the planning of a unique trail in the Ein Kerem Stream, which interfaces with the Ein Kerem Neighborhood, linking it and making it accessible to nature hikes.
As part of the project, KKL-JNF shall be responsible for the development and maintenance of the hiking trails in open areas and in forests, while the Municipality is assuming responsibility for the municipal sections and their integration into the public transportation systems.
The Mayor of Jerusalem, Moshe Leon: "In recent years, Jerusalem has undergone a real revolution in countless areas. The project for establishing hiking trails is intended to amplify the nature and leisure experience of Jerusalem residents and its visitors, while conserving the values of nature and improving accessibility. The Jerusalemite nature, the green lungs and the link between them in the hiking trails is a vision that is being fulfilled for the residents and visitors of the city. Come, walk and enjoy."
KKL-JNF Chairwoman Ifat Ovadia-Luski: "Jerusalem, a city knit together, will now be connected with trails. The hiking trails project will strengthen the bond between man and nature but will primarily give us the option of thing to our capital Jerusalem through our feet. The system of trails will enable any resident and any visitor to enjoy the green spaces of Jerusalem and its historical sites. We are proud to be part of this Zionist initiative and are convinced that it will transform Jerusalem into a global model for municipal-natural connections."
