The new center is set to become a premier regional sports hub, hosting both national and international competitions. It will feature professional athletics tracks, long jump and high jump pits, upgraded soccer fields, and dedicated spectator stands.
This athletics center project is part of a larger initiative to restore and enhance the infrastructure in the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council, an area still recovering from past challenges while dealing with ongoing security concerns. The center will serve as a dynamic hub for both amateur and professional athletes, encouraging physical activity as a cornerstone of the community's psychological and social resilience.
The athletics field will host a diverse range of educational programs, sports clubs, and community events. Once completed, it is expected to accommodate around 1,500 participants each week, including children, youth, and adults. Additionally, the center will provide space for educational activities and after-school sports leagues.

Uri Epstein, Head of the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council, stated: "The center will feature state-of-the-art facilities, setting the highest standard in the south. It will offer athletes from Sha’ar HaNegev and the surrounding region the opportunity to enjoy, develop, and excel in a variety of sports disciplines. Thanks to this center, Sha’ar HaNegev will become a central hub for athletes across different areas of athletics. We are committed to the ongoing development of the region, and this project—carried out in partnership with JNF-USA and KKL-JNF—serves as a powerful symbol of hope, resilience, and growth. Initiatives like this are essential for the continued revitalization of the western Negev, and I am deeply grateful for the strong partnership and unwavering solidarity."
Russell Robinson, CEO of JNF-USA, said: "Ofir was a close friend and an extraordinary individual who dedicated his life to developing his community. The new athletics center embodies the strong spirit of Sha’ar HaNegev and reflects our commitment to the region’s ongoing growth. Sports are a powerful tool for strengthening communities, building resilience, and offering hope. We are proud to partner in creating a space that will provide lasting opportunities for the residents of this region—today and in the future."
Ifat Ovadia-Luski, Chairwoman of KKL-JNF, added: "The revival of Israel after the war is the most significant Zionist challenge today. We view this project as an important milestone in the renewed development of the Gaza envelope, following the crisis it endured. This initiative promotes sports in the region, which is essential for both physical and emotional healing. The athletics center, named after Ofir Libstein z”l, will be innovative and one of the leading centers in Israel, serving as a source of pride for the region. KKL-JNF will continue to support initiatives for the communities in the envelope, and together, we will rebuild this beautiful part of our country."
