Although over four years have passed since the Second Lebanese War, its scars can still be seen in Biriya Forest in the Upper Galilee – bald spots in the forest, the result of the fire. Rehabilitation of the forest took three years and was completed, but it will still take many more years until the burnt forest looks like it did before the war.

"As of this moment, we are still studying the extent of the damage. There are certain things that we won't know until the spring, when we will see which trees blossom and find out if they're still alive. We're not cutting many trees down yet, even if they're burned, because their roots help prevent soil erosion."

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and KKL-JNF World Chairman Efi Stenzler organized a tribute for the ambassadors of the countries who assisted Israel in putting out the Carmel forest fire, hosting them at a special appreciation ceremony. Foreign Minister Lieberman and the KKL-JNF Chairman to the ambassadors: "You saved the Carmel. We should jointly create an international task force to deal with future catastrophes."

He spoke about the recent fire that destroyed about 5,000,000 trees, and shared his thoughts on forest care and how to work with nature to ensure the forest's safety and future.

As part of the events that took place at the UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico, the Israeli delegation held a side event that addressed the various ways of adapting to life in arid regions. KKL-JNF initiated the side event together with the government of Israel in order to present and share the knowledge Israel has acquired on adapting to hot and arid climates.
